In just our first year, the Lyles Swanson Empower Foundation awarded 8 scholarship, totaling $16,000 in funding for Black scholars pursuing higher education.
Of these, 7 scholars are eligible for renewal, ensuring continued financial support as they progress in their college careers.
In May 2025, we will award our second McCormick High School Scholarship, providing $2,000 to support another deserving student for the 2025-2026 academic year.
More Than Just Scholarship–A Support System for Success
Every Lyles Swanson Empower Scholar is paired with a mentor who provides guidance, academic support, and career advice.
Scholars meet with their mentors quarterly to discuss goals, challenges, and strategies for academic success.
Through these mentor relationships, students gain confidence and build professional networks that will benefit them beyond their college years.

Jerome Lyles' Sock Drive
One of our scholars initiated a passion project by donating socks to a local nursing home near his campus. Inspired by his generosity, the foundation matched the total number of socks he collected, doubling the impact of his efforts.
Giving Back: A Core Value of Our Scholars
As part of the renewal process, scholars commit to volunteer services, using their skills and time to uplift their communities.
Collectively, our scholars have dedicated over 100 volunteer hours to various organizations, demonstrating their commitment to making a difference.
Expanding Our Reach in the Coming Years
We are proud of what we've accomplished in our first year, but this is just the beginning.
As we grow, we aim to:
Increase scholarship funding to support more students.
Expand mentorship opportunities by connecting scholars with industry professionals.
Encourage scholars to develop passion projects that create lasting change in their communities.
